How do I apply to study in Alberta?

Research and explore education opportunities

To have the optimal education experience, you will want to find the program that best fits your needs and goals. There are several things to consider as you evaluate what program is right for you. Some factors to consider include location, program length, specialized programs, admission requirements and cost.

Our Alberta's Regions and the School District pages may help you to decide on a location. This page provides you with links to the websites of a number of school districts.

Find a school you would like to attend

Alberta has created school districts to oversee the education of students living in our cities and town. They are also responsible for the admission and registration of all students in their area of responsibility, including international students.

Once you’ve decided where in Alberta you wish to study, contact the local school district who will help find the right school and program for you. School district staff will outline the various English language learning supports available and find an appropriate combination of academic and options courses for you. They will also provide you with the necessary forms and guide you through their application process.

Apply to the school district

The application process varies from one school district to another, but generally students are required to submit the following to complete the application process:

  • Application fee (varies with each school district)
  • A letter of reference from your current principal
  • Your most recent report card
  • A copy of your academic record (transcripts) for the last two years
  • Custodianship documents

Pay your tuition fees

Once your application is accepted by the school district, they will issue you a letter of acceptance. After you receive this letter, you may pay your tuition fees to the appropriate school district. Fees and payment procedures for international students vary according to school authority. Contact the local school district for more details.
