English as a Second Language

Most Alberta post-secondary institutions offer programs that will help improve your English language skills and proficiency. There are generally two types of ESL programs:

Academic ESL programs

These programs are tailored to help meet the English Language Proficiency requirements of the academic program you intend to take. They are often referred to as “English for Academic Purposes” or EAP programs.

ESL Only programs

These programs are generally tailored to students who are interested in intensive English language studies. They usually are not required for entry into institutions’ academic programs.

When you go to an institution’s website, make sure that you evaluate all of their ESL options. In some cases, the English for Academic Purposes programs are located and managed separately than the ESL programs, whereas in other cases institutions offer only one ESL program to service all international student needs.

Importantly, if you need to meet English Language Proficiency requirements, be sure you know what the institution requires specifically. Most institutions require successful completion and achievement of a minimum score on a standardized English Language test (for example, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS)). Another requirement may be the successful completion of their English for Academic Purposes program.
