Class Registration

class Teachers, principals and/or school counselors are available to assist international students in making the best personal and educational choices. They generally meet with students shortly after their arrival and help to arrange the student’s class schedule. To determine which classes would be most appropriate, teachers, principals and/or school counselors consider a variety of factors, including the student’s interests, previous school records, age and English language proficiency.

Required Classes

To graduate, all students must study the following subjects: English or French language arts, mathematics, sciences, social studies, physical education and Career and Life Management (CALM). Schools with religious affiliation may also require students to participate in religious or moral instruction.

Optional Classes

The availability of optional classes varies from school to school. Optional courses may include the following: second languages, fine arts, music, health, home economics, personal and social skills training, vocational training, and computer and technology studies. Each school has staff that will help students choose courses that meet their present needs and future goals.

English as a Second Language classes

Student who require English language support are generally enrolled in English Second Language (ESL) classes. ESL classes can help students adjust to the new language as well as to the cultural values, customs and social expectations that they will encounter while in Alberta.
